Hong Kong Science Park, SenseTime to build AI data centre by 2030

The Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP) and Chinese artificial intelligence firm SenseTime have announced a partnership to construct a home-grown AI data centre by 2030. This initiative is designed to bolster the industrialization of the AI sector in Hong Kong.

The data centre will be developed in three stages, with the first phase anticipated for completion by the end of the current year. By 2030, the facility is targeted to achieve a computing power of 40,000 petaflops, a crucial metric for training advanced AI models. HKSTP CEO Terry Wong Ping-sau emphasized that the collaboration will significantly advance Hong Kong's 'AI+' Information and Technology ecosystem, driving the city towards AI industrialization and the AI-enabled transformation of various industries.

Wong also noted that the Science Park has already attracted over 500 AI companies, supported by more than 5,000 AI specialists. SenseTime Chairman and CEO Xu Li described the partnership as highly complementary, capable of creating deep industrial-chain coverage to foster end-to-end innovation within the sector. He further suggested that SenseTime could leverage Hong Kong's financial and legal services expertise to complement mainland Chinese industries, establishing a model of 'train on the mainland, process in Hong Kong, serve the world' to facilitate the global expansion of AI products and services.
