EU tech sovereignty may be illusion amid US, China AI dominance: expert

The EU defines technological sovereignty as the capacity to develop, control, and scale essential technologies, infrastructure, services, and data. This move comes as several nations, including Canada, Japan, South Korea, and India, are also prioritizing the development of their own AI autonomy. These efforts are driven by a growing concern that these countries might become passive observers in the escalating competition for AI supremacy between the United States and China.

Canada, for instance, has earmarked C$2.3 billion (approximately $1.6 billion) for its national AI strategy, with a significant portion dedicated to establishing a sovereign Canadian AI foundation. Meanwhile, a Chinese expert has expressed skepticism regarding the EU's ambition, suggesting that its concept of tech sovereignty might be an "illusion" in the current global landscape dominated by US and Chinese AI advancements. The expert urged China to leverage the current geopolitical climate to make its products indispensable to middle-tier nations.
