Google is looking to accelerate and streamline the update process for its Chrome browser, driven by a significant increase in detected software vulnerabilities. The company attributes this surge to advanced AI security analysis models that can probe for flaws at unprecedented speeds. Recent Chrome releases have incorporated a substantially higher number of bug fixes compared to previous periods, with two recent milestone builds containing over 1,000 fixes combined, surpassing the total from the preceding 23 releases.
This heightened vulnerability discovery rate raises concerns that malicious actors could also exploit software flaws more rapidly. To counter this, Google is enhancing its update strategy. This includes piloting a system for twice-weekly updates to ensure browsers are patched against AI-fueled attacks more quickly. Furthermore, Google is developing methods to apply these updates without interrupting the user experience. On macOS, a new 'zero window restart' mechanism allows updates to be applied when the browser is closed but not fully quit, completing the installation upon the next launch. The company is also investing in a technique called 'dynamic patching,' which aims to allow automatic installation of patches without requiring any browser restart at all.
