Google announced on Thursday that its internal AI tools have enabled it to fix more security bugs in its Chrome browser in June than in the previous two years combined. The company patched a total of 1,072 security flaws in the two most recent versions of Chrome, released last month. This figure surpasses the 1,036 bugs fixed across the 23 versions released over the past two years.
Doug Turner, Chrome's Director of Engineering, stated that large language models (LLMs) have fundamentally altered cybersecurity economics, transforming vulnerability discovery into an automated, industrial-scale operation. He added that by using models like Gemini, Google is proactively fixing vulnerabilities, staying ahead of adversaries, and enhancing Chrome's safety with each update.
This trend is also being observed by other major tech companies. Microsoft recently reported patching a record 570 security flaws across its product lines, attributing the jump to its use of AI. In contrast, Apple does not appear to be experiencing a similar exponential increase in bug fixes, with its recent numbers roughly on par with previous years.
