The International Aerospace Exhibition (ILA) in Berlin featured a significant presence from the Bundeswehr, Germany's armed forces, which used the event to showcase its latest military capabilities and recruit new personnel. Colonel Kristof Conrath, the lead officer for the Bundeswehr's ILA project, highlighted the strategic importance of presenting modern systems such as drones, the P-8 Poseidon, and air defense systems.
Conrath explained that the selection of equipment for display focused on cutting-edge technology, including the Navy's new P-8A Poseidon and special anniversary liveries on four Air Force aircraft to mark its 70th year. He noted a shift in public perception since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with a greater understanding of the necessity for robust military capabilities.
Addressing the debate on the future of fighter jets in an era of advanced drones, Conrath firmly stated that manned aircraft remain indispensable. He argued for the necessity of a human 'in the loop' for critical decision-making, citing potential disruptions to GPS and communication systems that could render autonomous AI systems unreliable.
