Autonomous Key offers a novel approach to managing screen time by utilizing a physical NFC key to lock distracting applications on smartphones. Unlike software-based screen time apps that rely on user willpower, this $9 device requires a physical scan to regain access to locked apps, turning impulsive usage into a deliberate action. The companion app employs AI to analyze user habits, offering insights with a distinctively sassy personality, such as suggesting the key be placed further away if frequently unlocked.
The key is designed to be more affordable than competitors like Blok ($29), Unpluq ($26.50), and Brick ($59), while still providing core functionality. It measures approximately three inches long and is compatible with smartphones running Android 8.0 or later and iPhones with iOS 15 or later. A single key can be paired with multiple phones, making it suitable for individuals with several devices or for family use. The company is also developing a backup unlock method for situations where the key is lost.
During testing, the NFC scan occasionally required multiple attempts to register, suggesting it may not be ideal for essential apps needed throughout the day.
