A judge has ordered Waymo to stop the overnight charging of its autonomous vehicles in Santa Monica due to persistent noise complaints from residents. The ruling provides immediate relief to neighbors who described the constant sounds of acceleration and deceleration from the electric vehicles as akin to a "fleet of locusts" and disruptive, particularly after bars let out in the early morning hours.
Mayor Caroline Torosis stated that residents' ability to sleep peacefully is non-negotiable and that the ruling affirms community concerns. Waymo began utilizing the facilities in January 2025, and following numerous complaints and an online petition, the City of Santa Monica initially ordered the company to halt overnight operations. This led to a lawsuit filed by the city against Waymo in November 2025, a case which is still ongoing and includes a countersuit from Waymo.
The next court hearing in the matter is scheduled for October 2026.
