In a significant development for legal technology, Garfield AI, the world's first AI-powered law firm authorized by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), has secured its inaugural court victory. The firm represented a freelancer, Tamires Camal Taquidir, in a small claims case to recover £7,000 in unpaid HR service fees from a hospitality business.
Following a three-hour trial at Wandsworth County Court in May, the court ruled entirely in favor of the claimant, dismissing the defendant's counterclaim. Garfield AI, founded by lawyer Philip Young and quantum physicist Daniel Long, specializes in English small-claims debt recovery and was authorized by the SRA in May 2025.
The firm managed all pre-trial procedures, including generating correspondence, initiating court proceedings, preparing documents, and assembling trial bundles. For the court advocacy, Garfield AI instructed junior barrister Dominic Li of One Essex Court.
Philip Young described the outcome as a "landmark moment" for access to justice, emphasizing that AI made the litigation process more accessible, efficient, and affordable. Daniel Long added that the case demonstrates the real-world capabilities of legal AI, stating it is not about replacing lawyers but enhancing the process. Since its launch, Garfield AI has seen over 600 claims initiated on its platform, recovering more than £500,000 for users with claim values ranging from £30 to £10,000.
