Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) is facing significant criticism for his response to recent allegations against Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for the Maine Senate seat. Platner's campaign has received $10,000 in donations from Whitehouse's leadership PAC, Ocean PAC. Despite troubling details emerging about Platner's past, including allegations of rape fantasies, heavy drinking, violent episodes, and controversial statements, Whitehouse dismissed the reporting as "a lot of nothing." He specifically referred to one accuser, Lyndsey Fifield, who works for a right-wing political operation, as the only one with "unsettling" things to say. This reaction has drawn sharp condemnation online, with critics comparing Whitehouse's stance to his questioning of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh regarding high school slang. Whitehouse had previously been a vocal advocate for believing survivors during Kavanaugh's confirmation hearings. Platner himself has denied most of the allegations as untrue and politically motivated, while admitting to past struggles with PTSD and alcohol abuse. He currently holds a 4 percentage point lead over incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins, according to a recent poll. Fifield has since criticized the New York Times for allegedly watering down her account of the allegations.
