A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers has introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives to honor the sacrifices of Korean War veterans and those who have served on the Korean Peninsula since the 1950-53 war's armistice. Representatives Lois Frankel (D-FL) and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) introduced the resolution, titled "Acknowledging the courage and sacrifice of veterans of the Korean War and Korean Defense Veterans," on Monday, coinciding with the 73rd anniversary of the armistice signing.
Frankel stated that the "heroes of the 'Forgotten War' must never be overlooked" and deserve the gratitude of both American and South Korean people. Bilirakis emphasized that Korean War veterans defended freedom, democracy, and national values, helping to preserve peace and prevent the spread of tyranny. The resolution, cosponsored by 10 other congressional members, including Grace Meng (D-NY) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), specifically recognizes the contributions of veterans who served to defend South Korea post-armistice.
The resolution highlights that many Korean War veterans did not receive the same level of recognition as those from World War I and II, asserting that they and subsequent Korean defense veterans deserve acknowledgment for their service. It further states that the South Korean and U.S. people are "eternally grateful" to these veterans.
