Trump touts 'BEST ECONOMY EVER' amid inflation concerns

Despite Trump's claims, Americans largely disapprove of his handling of the economy and approach to inflation. An NPR/PBS News/Marist poll released last week showed that only 33 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the economy, his lowest point in both of his terms and three points lower than former President Biden's all-time low.

The cost of living has also contributed to dissatisfaction. Inflation in May increased to 4.2 percent, its highest point in three years. The food index saw a 3.1 percent increase over the past year, and energy prices jumped nearly 4 percent. These price increases are attributed to the Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has disrupted the flow of goods like oil and fertilizer from the Middle East. Experts suggest prices may take time to decrease even after the Strait reopens.

Trump has previously dismissed affordability as a concern, calling it a "fake word, made up by the Democrats." He also expressed acceptance of high inflation numbers, stating he "loved it" and that going to war in Iran was necessary. Trump told reporters earlier this month that the U.S. had hit the highest stock market and 401(k)s in history before initiating the attack on Iran.
