US President Donald Trump has pledged to visit India, signaling a thaw in relations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi following a bilateral meeting at the G7 summit in France. Trump stated that a trade deal between the two nations was close to finalization.
The leaders discussed security concerns, with Modi raising the safety of Indian sailors working in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane for global oil and gas supplies. Trump assured that the US would support India if it were attacked.
Relations between the US and India had previously been strained due to trade disputes, including US tariffs on Indian goods and Trump's claims of brokering an India-Pakistan ceasefire and offering mediation on Kashmir, which India rejects. The US administration's crackdown on immigration and restrictions on H-1B visas also contributed to tensions.
Officials are set to meet in Delhi next week to negotiate the final aspects of the US-India trade deal. India imports approximately 90% of its oil and has been significantly impacted by conflicts affecting the Strait of Hormuz.
