Key facts
- Donald Trump must pay E. Jean Carroll $5 million.
- A jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation.
- Trump's attempts to delay payment were rejected by the courts.
- A separate $83.3 million judgment against Trump is still under appeal.
Donald Trump has been ordered to pay E. Jean Carroll $5 million after his final attempts to delay the payment were rejected by the courts. The Supreme Court had previously declined to consider Trump's effort to overturn the 2023 verdict, and subsequent appeals to the 2nd Circuit were also denied.
The $5 million judgment stems from a trial where a jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation. Carroll had alleged that Trump raped her in the 1990s and later dismissed her claims as a "hoax." Trump is still pursuing an appeal for a separate $83.3 million judgment awarded to Carroll in early 2024 for additional defamatory remarks.
Trump had already placed the $5 million into a court-maintained account during the appeals process, and it will now be transferred to Carroll. The judge noted that Trump had been stalling the case for years and it was time for him to "do equity" and pay the judgment.
