Donald Trump used a speech to religious conservatives to preview a Republican strategy for the upcoming midterm elections, characterizing Democrats as "godless communists" and an existential threat to the nation. Speaking at the Faith & Freedom Coalition's annual Road to Majority conference, Trump seized on recent progressive primary victories in New York, including those endorsed by democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, to stoke fears of extremism and the potential persecution of Christians.
Trump warned that the "radical left" aims to "resume the transgender mutilation of children" and restart a "war on Christians and churches," asserting that these communists "want to completely destroy the traditional American way of life." He also claimed, without evidence, that these politicians "hate our country and our people" and that "assassinations" are an important element of their ideology.
He accused the Democratic party establishment of capitulating to the left, stating they are "becoming a communist party – not social democrats. They are core communists." Trump emphasized his belief that "all communists are godless" and that they "attack all religions, but in particular Christianity."
House Speaker Mike Johnson also addressed the conference, echoing concerns about radical candidates and warning that "the foundations of America are under violent and unprecedented attack." He described the current political climate as having "little mini-Mamdanis popping up all around the country" and that "some of the most radical people who have ever run for office are on the ballot."
Attendees at the conference largely expressed continued support for Trump, with some praising his actions on religious liberty and foreign policy, while others expressed reservations about specific actions or the war in Iran.
