Trump calls for impeachment of Senator Reed over Iran deal criticism

Trump posted on Truth Social that Reed was either a "fraud, or incompetent" for stating that the new deal was not as good as the Obama-era JCPOA. He described the original deal as a "road to a Nuclear weapon for Iran" and his administration's agreement as a "WALL against Iran ever having a Nuclear weapon."

A sitting senator cannot be impeached but can be expelled by a two-thirds vote. Reed had appeared on Fox News Sunday, where he described the new deal as a "birthday gift" for Trump that fails to ensure safety from the Iranian regime or secure long-term non-proliferation objectives. He stated that Iran's nuclear breakout time had decreased from 12 months under the JCPOA to one week.

Reed told reporters that Trump dislikes being questioned and that his reaction was a "tirade by someone who was upset" because there was "a lot of truth" in his statement. He added, "We don’t have a deal yet — we have a deal to make a deal."

Trump and Vice President Vance signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran on Sunday, initiating a 60-day negotiation period for a longer agreement. Details of the deal were not immediately disclosed but are expected to be released soon. Lawmakers and former President Obama have expressed concerns that the new deal may mirror the terms of the JCPOA.
