According to an Axios report, elements within the Trump administration are reviving efforts to implement de facto bans on foreign open-source AI models. This initiative is also influenced by an increasing number of U.S. companies exploring Chinese AI models, citing their cost-effectiveness and strong performance. The Kimi K3 model, in particular, has been a focal point, with its open-weight and open-source nature contributing to its hype. Moonshot plans to release the Kimi K3 open-source model on July 27.
Concerns about the U.S. potentially losing the AI race to China have been voiced by prominent figures. Former White House Crypto Czar David Sacks highlighted that the Kimi K3 model ranked first on the Frontend Code Arena and performed at or near the frontier on other benchmarks, calling it "concerning."
