Richard Glossip, a former Oklahoma death row inmate, is scheduled to appear in court as his case moves toward a retrial for a 1997 murder. Glossip was released on bond last month after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned his conviction, which had led to three near-executions over nearly three decades of incarceration.
Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond has stated the state intends to retry Glossip on the murder charge but will not seek the death penalty again. The upcoming hearing will determine if the case proceeds directly to a retrial or if Glossip will receive a new hearing to assess the evidence.
Glossip was convicted in the killing of his former boss, motel owner Barry Van Treese, who was beaten to death in what prosecutors described as a murder-for-hire plot. The Supreme Court's decision to overturn the conviction was based on the finding that prosecutors allowed a key witness to provide testimony known to be false, violating Glossip's constitutional right to a fair trial.
Glossip has consistently maintained his innocence and has garnered support from notable figures, including Kim Kardashian. Van Treese's family had urged the Supreme Court to uphold Glossip's conviction and sentence. During his time on death row, Glossip had nine execution dates set and was held in a cell adjacent to the execution chamber in 2015.
