Former President Barack Obama stated on Wednesday that he believes President Donald Trump has an "obsession" with him, describing it as existing in a "suite in his head."
During an appearance on the "All the Smoke" podcast, Obama responded to a question about Trump's fascination with him and his family. Obama repeated co-host Matt Barnes's interjection of "The obsession," adding, "I obviously have a room in his head, a suite in his head."
Obama recalled that during his own presidency, thinking about former President George W. Bush was "the last thing I had time to… worry about." He expressed that the idea of constantly worrying about a predecessor is "a strange thing" and indicates someone "who is not focused on the American people."
He also suggested that Trump behaves differently in private compared to public appearances. Obama stated his belief in face-to-face conversation, noting that when Trump has been in front of him, "he don’t talk like that because he knows better." Obama attributed this to the "filter of the phone" allowing people to say things they wouldn't say in person.
The two presidents have been observed to be cordial in public, including sitting together at former President Carter’s funeral. However, Trump has increasingly criticized Obama's administration, particularly the Iran nuclear deal, which Trump withdrew from in 2018. Trump recently accused Obama of being a "weak and ineffective leader" who empowered Iran through financial concessions.
It is widely believed that Obama's remarks at the 2011 White House Correspondents' Association dinner contributed to tensions between the two men and may have fueled Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. Obama also compared Trump's "birther" conspiracy theory to other historical conspiracies, such as the moon landing and the whereabouts of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls.
