Missouri judge restores medication abortion access

The ruling was celebrated by reproductive rights advocates. Gillian Wilcox, Director of Litigation for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), called the decision a "monumental win for reproductive freedom and abortion access." Emily Wales, president and CEO of Comprehensive Health of Planned Parenthood Great Plains, stated that the decision "brings compassion and common sense back to Missouri health care," allowing patients to access trusted abortion care within the state.

However, Republican Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway expressed disappointment, calling the ruling "radical" and stating that her office plans to "expeditiously appeal" the decision to the state's high court. She argued that the ruling allows abortion providers to police themselves and removes requirements for complication plans, insurance, and basic health and safety inspections.

Missouri voters are set to face another referendum in November. This vote would repeal the previous abortion amendment approved in 2024 and further limit abortion access to cases of medical emergencies, rape, or incest. Wilcox urged residents to vote against this measure, warning that access gained through the recent ruling could be lost.
