Philipson had immigrated to Israel less than a year ago to enlist through the Mahal program for Jewish and non-Israeli volunteers. He was nearing the end of his paratrooper training with the 202nd Battalion of the Paratroopers Brigade. His death marks the fourth soldier suicide in recent weeks, prompting urgent efforts within the military to address a rising mental health crisis.
The military does not publish real-time suicide statistics, a policy that has drawn criticism from advocates who say the issue remains underreported. According to data released earlier this year, 21 soldiers took their own lives in 2024, an increase from 17 in 2023. The military has stated that none of these recent cases appear directly tied to the military’s operations across its various fronts.
