India's Gen Z cockroach party resists lure of election after rattling Modi

India's Gen-Z Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), founded by Abhijeet Dipke, has stated it will not immediately enter electoral politics despite its recent success in protesting exam paper leaks, which led to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Dipke told Reuters that the party's immediate focus is on consulting with young people to form an agenda and build a social movement aimed at restoring trust and accountability in India's institutions.

Dipke, who recently returned to India after studying in the United States, spearheaded demonstrations that gained significant traction, drawing tens of thousands of young people. The protests highlighted concerns over high unemployment rates among youth, even amidst rapid economic growth. In response to the pressure, the government has proposed stricter legal penalties for exam leaks and established a panel to review the examination system.

Despite efforts by opposition parties to leverage the protests, Dipke ruled out supporting any political party and expressed reservations about forming a political party himself, fearing potential government investigations. He indicated that contesting elections would only be considered if a majority of people demanded it, emphasizing the current need for a public movement over a formal political party.

Analysts suggest that while the issue may not significantly impact upcoming state elections, it could become a more considerable factor in the 2029 general elections if the CJP maintains its momentum and continues to champion youth issues. Dipke is currently recovering from typhoid contracted during the protest and is under government security due to social media threats.
