A honeymoon trip to Donald Trump's Doral resort in Miami turned into a prolonged immigration ordeal for Bryan José Rojas Galofre, a Venezuelan immigrant living in Wisconsin.
Rojas and his wife, Socorro Zaragosa, arrived at the resort in January 2025. During a security check, authorities found an airsoft gun, which Zaragosa stated she carried for protection, and a metal marijuana grinder. The couple was arrested on a drug-paraphernalia charge, and Rojas subsequently faced scrutiny regarding potential gang affiliations.
Despite having no prior criminal record and actively pursuing asylum and family-based immigration relief, Rojas was detained by ICE for nearly three months. His release on bond was secured after his family raised thousands of dollars.
The financial strain from legal fees and bond payments has left the couple with over $80,000 in debt, forcing them to sell their home, vehicle, and retirement savings. Rojas, who remains in immigration limbo, has become an advocate for more compassionate immigration policies, using his experience to highlight the challenges faced by migrants with pending legal cases.
Notably, Zaragosa expressed continued support for Donald Trump, stating, "I'm his fan. I believe Trump is a good president," while also lamenting the unfairness and hardship her family endured.
