Former Prime Minister Kim Min-seok has won the Democratic Party (DP) primaries in the capital region, a significant step towards securing the leadership of the ruling party. Kim secured 46.66 percent of the votes in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, narrowly defeating Jung Chung-rae, who garnered 46.28 percent. Song Young-gil trailed in third place with 7.06 percent.
Kim has previously won primaries in the central Chungcheong region, Incheon and Jeju Island, Gangwon Province, Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province, and Gwangju and Jeolla provinces. Jung Chung-rae secured victories in Busan, Ulsan, and South Gyeongsang Province.
Overall, Kim leads the cumulative vote count with 49.91 percent, while Jung trails at 41.51 percent.
