Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, a prominent Cuban dissident artist and leader of the San Isidro Movement, has gone into exile in the United States after completing a five-year prison sentence in Cuba. He arrived in Miami, where he was greeted by supporters. Alcántara, 38, accepted exile as a means to escape persecution and continue his activism.
Alcántara was arrested in July 2021 during major anti-government protests and subsequently sentenced to five years for charges including public disorder and contempt. His imprisonment has been a point of diplomatic tension between the US and Cuba. The San Isidro Movement, which Alcántara co-founded, campaigns for freedom of speech and democracy, claims it is funded by Washington and used to subvert the state, which the movement denies.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Alcántara's imprisonment was due to his activism demanding basic freedoms for Cubans. The US has recently increased pressure on Cuba through sanctions and other measures, including an indictment against former Cuban leader Raúl Castro.
