He indicated that the U.S. would "probably look at some of these companies that are coming in from South Korea and other places" for shipbuilding. He also mentioned the possibility of purchasing ships made outside the U.S., despite the nation possessing the world's strongest navy, noting that existing vessels are aging and the U.S. has largely exited the shipbuilding business.

Earlier in the month, a South Korean presidential official had suggested that Trump did not rule out the prospect of U.S. naval vessels being constructed in South Korea. Furthermore, Trump reportedly engaged in discussions regarding shipbuilding cooperation with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung during their meeting at the Group of Seven summit in France last month.
