Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was released from a Dallas County jail on Tuesday after completing a 30-day sentence for violating probation terms stemming from a car crash. Rice, 26, was booked into jail on May 19 after testing positive for THC.
Upon his release, Rice quickly departed the facility in a waiting SUV. He had undergone knee surgery about a week before his sentencing and received approval to undergo rehabilitation at Parkland Hospital while serving his time. Rice missed the Chiefs' voluntary offseason workouts and mandatory minicamp due to his incarceration.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid indicated that Rice is expected to report on time for training camp at the end of July. Reid noted that the team's trainer, Rick Burkholder, has been coordinating Rice's rehabilitation efforts alongside his jail time. Reid emphasized the importance of life lessons and second chances for players.
Rice has been a valuable player when available, contributing significantly to the Chiefs' Super Bowl win in the 2023 season with 156 receptions for 1,797 yards and 14 touchdowns. However, he has also missed games due to suspensions and injuries, playing in only 28 games over three seasons. The team is looking for him to contribute to an offense that struggled during their 6-11 finish last season.
