Charlie Kirk's parents and widow, Erika Kirk, are scheduled to attend a key preliminary hearing for Tyler Robinson, the man accused of his murder. The hearing, set to begin July 6 in Utah, will be the most significant presentation of evidence in the case to date and the first time Kirk's family will be present in the courtroom with the accused.
Prosecutors aim to demonstrate they have enough evidence to proceed to a trial. They have stated their intention to seek the death penalty if Robinson, 23, is convicted of aggravated murder in the Sept. 10 shooting death of Kirk, a conservative activist. Kirk was shot while addressing a large crowd at Utah Valley University.
Erika Kirk, who assumed leadership of Turning Point USA after her husband's death, has publicly stated she forgives the young man accused of the killing. However, she has also advocated for maintaining public access to the court proceedings. She is expected to attend the weeklong hearing with Kirk's parents, Robert and Kathryn Kirk, who have largely remained out of the public eye.
According to prosecutors, the hearing will feature forensic analyses, surveillance video, witness statement recordings, autopsy findings, and alleged messages from Robinson admitting to the crime. Authorities have reported finding DNA consistent with Robinson's on the rifle used in the killing, as well as on related ammunition and a towel. Prosecutors also cited a note allegedly left by Robinson for his partner, stating his intention to 'take out Charlie Kirk.'
