Trinamool national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was questioned by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for over five hours on Thursday in connection with an alleged signature forgery case. The probe centers on the authenticity of signatures on documents submitted to the West Bengal Assembly for the selection of the Leader of the Opposition.
Investigators reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with Banerjee's responses, with sources indicating he repeatedly answered "I do not know" and showed agitation. The CID aims to clarify how signatures of absent legislators appeared on the resolution and who was responsible.
Following the questioning, a team of CID officers served a separate summons on Banerjee on Friday at his residence. This notice pertains to a case where he is accused of inciting violence and threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah at a public rally during recent assembly polls. Banerjee was reportedly not present at his home at the time and was at the residence of Mamata Banerjee.
Banerjee had previously missed three summonses in the forgery case, complying only after directions from the Calcutta High Court. He is scheduled to appear before the CID again on June 14 and is expected to provide relevant documents.
