Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative leader, has publicly criticized Nigel Farage regarding a £5 million gift he received from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne. Badenoch questioned the nature of the gift, suggesting it was not given without reason, and stated that such a sum could not simply be 'a gift'.
Her comments, published in the Mail on Sunday, came after Reform UK's underwhelming performance in recent byelections. Badenoch declared that these results have 'stone-dead' the possibility of any electoral pact between the Conservatives and Reform UK. She dismissed the idea of uniting the right, arguing that a victory 'helped' by Reform would not be a true win.
Farage's explanation for the £5 million gift, initially revealed by The Guardian, has reportedly changed. He first stated it was for lifetime personal security and later described it as a reward for his campaigning for Brexit. The gift is currently under investigation by the parliamentary standards commissioner to determine if it should have been declared.
In the Makerfield byelection, Labour's Andy Burnham secured a majority of over 9,000 votes against Reform's Robert Kenyon. Meanwhile, in Aberdeen South, the Scottish Conservatives defeated the Scottish National Party, with Reform UK finishing a distant third. Badenoch used these results to reinforce her stance against a pact, asserting that the Conservatives and Reform are fundamentally different and their voters are not interchangeable.
A spokesperson for Reform UK responded by stating they would not need to deal with the Tories, whom they blamed for 'breaking Britain', and claimed Reform UK had been leading national opinion polls for over a year.
