Counter-terrorism police are now leading the investigation into the death of former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced. The shift occurred after new information and evidence emerged during what police described as a dynamic and complex investigation. Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home in Devon on Thursday with serious injuries. A 28-year-old man was initially arrested on suspicion of murder, but has since been rearrested on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. Police had previously stated there was no information to suggest the attack was politically motivated and had ruled out a terrorist incident. The case has raised concerns about the security of politicians in the UK, following the murders of Jo Cox in 2016 and David Amess in 2021.
