It Hasn't Looked This Bad for the Bears in Months, and He's a Bear.

Tim Knight opens with a confession: it has not looked this bad for the bears in months. The market is pressing toward a lifetime high close, and he came into the day deliberately light, then trimmed further to around a third of normal exposure. The level he is fixed on is the top of the range the broad index has been stuck in since May, because a clean break would release months of pent-up energy. It is not all one way. He argues tech still has a fighting chance because it sits far below its highs with heavy overhead supply above it, and he thinks the weakness in crude looks more like a setup than the start of cheap gas. His largest position remains long-dated bearish exposure to China, he is skeptical of the story that one blown-up fund has cleared the decks, and he explains why covering into strength kept a bad day from being much worse.
