‘Mutually assured destruction’: Gavin Newsom rules out 2028 run against Kamala Harris

California Governor Gavin Newsom says he will not run for president in 2028 if Kamala Harris enters the race. Mr Newsom says competing against the former vice president would risk splitting the same support base and amount to “mutually assured destruction”. He says their supporters overlap too heavily for both of them to contest the Democratic nomination. Ms Harris has not confirmed whether she plans to run for President again.
