Milei suggests Trump could back Argentina against UK in reopened Falklands dispute

Argentine President Javier Milei has suggested US President Donald Trump could take Argentina's side against the UK, as the US signals a possible shift in its long-standing neutral stance over the Falklands. "Recently, President Trump declared that the United States is reevaluating its historical position regarding the Falklands. This threat is not harmless," Milei said during a nationally televised address on Thursday. "The United States is evaluating that change in position because they know that Argentina has a reliable partner, aligned with Western values, in a position of strategic relevance that can be a valuable ally in the decades to come. Without it, none of this would be possible." The shift comes amid Trump's close relationship with Milei and reported frustration with the UK over defence spending and support for US military operations, including in Iran. "Your country was not there to help me," Trump told GB News in a recent interview. The Falklands, a British overseas territory about 500 km (300 miles) east of the Argentine mainland, have long been claimed by Argentina. Britain has controlled the islands since 1833, and the two countries fought a brief war over them in 1982.
