Beneath good-faith US-China talks is a 'smouldering Cold War'

Retired US Air Force Brigadier General Robert Spalding says that despite the United States and China’s narrative of “strengthening ties” amid a meeting between the countries, there is a “Cold War” simmering beneath them. “Underneath is a smouldering Cold War, where each side is trying its best to take advantage of the other,” Mr Spalding told News24 Digital Presenter Gabriella Power. “I think the difference here really is how the United States has approached the relationship with China … particularly in the second Trump administration.”
