‘All losing at once’: Rent spikes up to 80 per cent as Labor fails Australians

News24 host Jaimee Rogers warns Australians are being crushed by soaring rents and housing costs as population growth continues to outpace the supply of homes and infrastructure. “Australia has managed something genuinely rare. A housing market where renters, owners and first home buyers are all losing at once,” Ms Rogers said. “In the Perth suburb of Balga, rents have jumped by more than $320 a week. That's over $16,000 a year extra for the same house. “In Sydney's Zetland, Chippendale and Haymarket, weekly rents have increased by up to $452. “In Melbourne's Southbank, rents have increased almost 70 per cent. “It's the government's job to make sure population growth doesn't outpace housing and infrastructure. And you can't make it harder and more expensive to invest and build, then wonder why rents keep rising.”
