Volunteers deliver oxygen tanks to Indonesians suffering breathing difficulties from wildfire haze

Volunteers in Indonesia's West Kalimantan province on Monday (Sep 14) delivered oxygen tanks door-to-door to residents and frontline firefighters suffering breathing difficulties as haze from widespread forest fires engulfs the region. At a volunteer-run "Rumah Oksigen" (Oxygen House) in Pontianak, workers prepared oxygen equipment before loading cylinders onto motorcycles and setting off for communities affected by the smoke. Patients visiting the Oxygen House receive oxygen saturation and blood pressure checks before being observed and treated by volunteers. The group's outreach teams also visit stations near wildfire hotspots, where firefighters battling blazes face prolonged exposure to smoke and extreme heat. Indonesia is battling what authorities have described as its most intense wildfire season in 11 years. Fire emissions from Sep 1 to 7 reached 19.7 million metric tons, the highest in the world during that period, according to data from the European Union's Copernicus climate monitoring service. Pontianak was among the areas hardest hit by the haze, with hazardous air quality levels recorded last week.
