South Korea says it hopes better ties between the US and the North can pave the way to meaningful dialogue. US President Donald Trump has ordered the Pentagon to substantially reduce military drills with Seoul. He cited the costs, Seoul's refusal to join Washington's efforts on Iran, and his "good relationship" with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises began today and will run until Aug 27. Around 18,000 South Korean troops are taking part. The drills are designed to strengthen readiness against what US and South Korea see as evolving threats from the North. Nick Harper reports from Washington DC.
