Thailand hosts Myanmar leader in bid to revive ASEAN re-engagement

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul welcomed the leader of Myanmar’s military-backed government Min Aung Hlaing on Thursday (Aug 6) with an honour guard welcome as Bangkok pushed for re-engagement between its war-torn neighbour and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This is Min Aung Hlaing’s first visit to Thailand as civilian leader, as he seeks a return to the diplomatic fold for his country. Myanmar's leaders have been barred from ASEAN summits since 2021, when Min Aung Hlaing staged a coup against the elected government of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi that led to a civil war that has killed an estimated 100,000 people. Thailand will be the fourth country Min Aung Hlaing has visited as leader, following official trips to China, India and Laos.
