South Korea opens parliamentary probe into World Cup failure

Former South Korea national football coach Hong Myung-bo apologised on Thursday (Jul 30) for falling short of public expectations at the World Cup, while denying he received preferential treatment in the process that led to his appointment. Hong appeared alongside former Korea Football Association (KFA) president Chung Mong-gyu at a government hearing as authorities investigate alleged transparency and governance issues within the KFA. Coach Hong had come under fire after South Korea was knocked out in the group stages of the World Cup, following a 1-0 loss to South Africa. His decision to bench captain Son Heung-min was heavily criticised.
