Over the next five years, Singapore is expecting to spend an average of up to 60% more on each person with disabilities. This comes as a government task force unveils a major revamp of support measures aimed at giving persons with disabilities clearer pathways beyond school. Its recommendations span from skills training, employment to healthcare, as well as helping families plan earlier for the future of their loved ones with disabilities. The proportion of special education graduates moving into employment, further studies or training rose from 51% in 2016 to 57% in 2023. Meanwhile, a new Employment Support Office will offer one-stop services — such as career advice and skills upgrading — for persons with disabilities throughout their working lives. Chloe Teo reports.
