Companies in Singapore that have performed well are being urged to share their gains with workers through pay rises and bonuses. Latest guidelines by the National Wages Council are also calling for larger increases for lower-wage workers. For lower-wage workers, the NWC advises a 6% to 8% salary increase, or S$120 to S$170, whichever is higher. But the NWC said adjustments should take into account employers' business performance and prospects. The council is also urging firms to fully adopt the flexible wage system, with annual and monthly variable pay components. This allows them to adjust wages according to business conditions, helping to preserve jobs during downturns. Germaine Wong reports.
