Singapore could merge Pulau Semakau, Pulau Bukom, Pulau Sudong and several other islands into a larger island, just like it did to create Jurong Island. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong made the announcement in his National Day Rally speech on Sunday (Aug 29), adding that the new island can support a new generation of industries, including advanced manufacturing facilities, and accommodate new power generation infrastructure for Singapore’s future needs. “These are long-term plans. We are studying them carefully,” he said. “Jurong Island shaped our economy for the last 50 years.
