Janil Puthucheary responds to questions on reported discrepancies in O-Level English oral exams

The Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) has concluded that the reported discrepancies in GCE O-Level English oral examinations in July was “not caused by a technical issue or a deliberate or malicious act”, said Senior Minister of State for Education Janil Puthucheary. The issue involved questions displayed on some candidates' screens which were said to have differed from that shown to oral examiners during the Jul 15 exam. Responding to MPs' questions in parliament on Wednesday (Aug 5), he said preliminary data also showed that candidates who reported the discrepancy scored comparably, on average, to other candidates who took the examination on four other occasions in 2026. He added that students whose performance may have been adversely affected can apply for special consideration.
