Chan Chun Sing on why complacency is Singapore's biggest risk in an uncertain world

Complacency poses one of the biggest risks to Singapore's future, said Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing, warning that decades of peace, security and economic success should never be taken for granted. Speaking at the 18th ASEAN & Asia Forum on Monday (Aug 3), Mr Chan said Singapore has had to earn its place in the world by staying connected globally, despite having no natural hinterland. He argued that openness and international connectivity are not optional for Singapore, but essential to its survival. Drawing lessons from conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas conflict, Mr Chan said countries often fail to act on warning signs because of complacency. He added that Singapore must remain vigilant against geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions and other emerging risks before they become crises. Mr Chan also urged younger Singaporeans to travel, build international networks and gain fresh perspectives from overseas.
