Australia should focus on migrants who are a good fit for its economy: Expert

Australia announced new migration curbs on Thursday (Sep 17), tightening student and backpacker visa rules as the government moves to bring down migration levels. Foreign students can no longer bring their partners and children while studying, although the new restrictions will not apply to those from ASEAN and Pacific countries or to students in certain courses, such as PhD programmes. Speaking to CNA’s Asia First, Robert Breunig, director of the Tax and Transfer Policy Institute at Australian National University’s Crawford School of Public Policy, says Australia should focus on attracting and retaining migrants who can contribute to its economy.
