AI data centre investment boom is peaking, says S&P Global chief economist

The investment boom in artificial intelligence data centres is peaking but, for now, is outweighing headwinds to economic growth, including trade tensions and energy price volatility, says Paul Gruenwald, global chief economist at S&P Global Ratings. Speaking to CNA’s Asia First on Wednesday (Sep 9) on the sidelines of S&P Global Energy’s Asia Pacific Petroleum Conference (APPEC), Gruenwald says data centre investment currently accounts for about half of United States private sector spending growth, adding that investment is expected to exceed US$1 trillion before levelling off in the 2030s.
