Why Chinese and US artists fall for intangible heritage

In Jingdezhen, China's porcelain capital, American artist Michael May from Oklahoma City explores how 3D-printed ceramics can harmonize with traditional Chinese ceramic intangible cultural heritage techniques. He first combines traditional handcraft and 3D printing to shape a large vessel, then invites local ceramic artist Master Xie to paint it with traditional blue-and-white (qinghua) decoration. Finally, together they glaze and fire the piece in the kiln – creating a one-of-a-kind ceramic artwork where technology and tradition meet. As Michael says, like coffee and tea, different cultures and crafts each have their own charm.
