German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Monday that his Christian Democratic Union (CDU) was "deeply shocked" by its worst election defeat in decades after the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) scored a record win in Saxony-Anhalt's state election. Merz vowed to continue economic reforms. The AfD won 43.8% of the vote and 39 of the state parliament's 83 seats, falling short of the absolute majority needed to govern alone.
