Yemen government forces strike Houthis as siege of Taiz worsens

Yemeni government forces have launched strikes against Ansarullah Houthi positions west of Taiz, as fighting intensifies around the besieged city. Government forces say they targeted Houthi military vehicles, positions and reinforcements amid repeated attempts by Houthi fighters to breach the city's western defences. Military aircraft have reportedly been flying over Taiz almost continuously for several days, while government officials accuse the Houthis of shelling residential neighbourhoods, causing deaths, injuries and damage to civilian property. The renewed fighting is worsening an already severe humanitarian crisis, with restrictions on supplies entering through the western entrance leaving residents facing shortages of food and cooking gas. According to the government office monitoring the siege, food prices have risen fivefold, raising fears that essential supplies could soon run out.
