Yemen fighting intensifies as government forces push to retake Red Sea territory

Fighting is intensifying along Yemen’s Red Sea coast as forces loyal to the internationally recognised government push to retake territory from the Houthis around the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait. The Yemeni government says its forces have driven the Houthis from several areas and retaken the port city of Mocha, while the Houthis insist they still control territory seized in recent weeks. The escalation has also spread beyond the battlefield, with the internationally recognised government accusing the Houthis of targeting Aden airport with ballistic missiles and drones, forcing a flight to divert, while the Saudi-led coalition says it intercepted a Houthi ballistic missile near Riyadh. The government has urged people in Houthi-held areas not to join the fighting. But as both sides battle for territory, more than 200,000 people have been displaced, with civilians forced into overcrowded camps and in need of food, shelter and other assistance.
